Theresa and Francis Beauregard of Norwich, waiting in the new wing of Foxwoods Resort Casino Tuesday evening, were asked their opinion of the casino's new area.

"It's very nice," said Theresa Beauregard. "I like it."

Anything in particular?

"It's particular if you win," Francis Beauregard said. "If you don't, it's not so good."

You can count on the Beauregards and tens of thousands of others to visit Eastern Connecticut's two Indian casinos. But 2004 saw construction at one casino, and increased production at another.

Foxwoods opened its $99 million Rainmaker Expansion in August, although parts of it, including the Wampum Rewards Megastore and the 2,100 lot parking garage, opened later in the fall. The machines in the wing have been performing very well, executives said, and the Hard Rock Cafe has been a steady performer. But the construction at the Rainmaker also pushed Mohegan Sun ahead of its senior competitor for most of the year.

It might be hard to have a bad year at the casinos. A slow month means $58 million from the slot machines. And both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun set monthly records in July, when gamblers sunk more than $1.8 billion into the slot machines and the casinos raked in $156 million. But the subtraction of parking spaces at Foxwoods appeared to drive many gamblers over to Mohegan Sun, which beat Foxwoods in both win and handle eight of the last 11 months.

The Beauregards, however, don't have a preferred casino. "We go to both," Theresa Beauregard said.
