| Five casino proposals create stir in the Borscht Belt |
As the new year approaches, residents in the Catskills are still waiting for the casino boom to begin.
State leaders came up with a post-September eleventh plan three years ago to allow American Indian tribes to build three casinos in western New York and three others in the Catskills.
Western New York has two of its three casinos. So far, the Catskills have come up empty. Now, Governor Pataki has worked out a deal for two more Indian-owned casinos in the Catskills.
But some residents of Sullivan County — potential site for several of the Catskills casinos — say five new gambling attractions may bee too much, especially since the first one appears a long way from becoming a reality.
Developers say a Catskills casino would draw gamblers from the heavily populated New York City metro region, creating thousands of jobs in a region that's eager for an economic boom.
