| French casinos face crippling strike |
France's 17,000 casino workers, fed up with declining tips and low-paid overnight shifts, are to go on strike New Year's Eve to rob their employers of their most lucrative night of the year.
All 188 casinos across France are expected to be hit by the action following the failure of last-minute negotiations to agree a wage increase and better working conditions, unions said.
Many workers complain that the introduction of automated poker machines six years ago have increasingly drawn gamblers away from the card and roulette tables, and as a result tips have declined significantly.
They also want greater compensation for working nights in the form of six extra vacation days per year.
But employer federations representing the casinos have resisted, saying that although annual revenues have hit a record $3.5bn, taxes swallow most of that.
An official from one of the unions covering the workers, David Rousset, said the employees felt clients supported their stand.
