| Ontario Invests in Casino Windsor |
The Ontario government is investing $400 million in Casino Windsor, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Joseph Cordiano announced today.
"Casino Windsor attracts around six million visitors each year and is a key driver of the local economy," said Cordiano. "Our government recognizes this strategic investment is crucial to safeguard jobs and keep Windsor and the surrounding region strong and competitive."
Casino Windsor attracts 80 per cent of its patrons from the U.S. and has recently faced increasing competition from the Detroit gaming market.
"Windsor led the way in the development of Ontario's gaming industry and the casino has become an integral part of the local economy," said Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Community and Social Services and MPP for Windsor West.
"With this investment, the people of Windsor can look forward to the city's continued growth as a leading regional tourist and business destination."
Key features of the project - scheduled for completion in 2007 - include:
- 400-room hotel tower
- 5,000-seat auditorium/theatre
- 100,000 square feet of convention space
- Renovations to Casino Windsor
The new hotel, entertainment complex and conference centre will position Windsor to secure new tourism and convention business, making the casino itself more competitive.
Casino Windsor currently employs almost 4,300 people and is the third largest employer in the Windsor-Essex region. When complete, the new complex will create an additional 400 permanent jobs.
"This investment will ensure the casino complex continues to play its full role in keeping Windsor ahead in an increasingly competitive regional market," said Dwight Duncan, Minister of Energy and MPP for Windsor-St. Clair.
"Today's announcement will breathe new life into the city centre."
